KATHMANDU, Sept 16: A joint market inspection team led by the Department of Commerce (DoC), Department of Food Technology and Quality Control (DFTQC) and the Consumer Interests Protection Forum on Thursday sealed a sweets shop at Gaushala after finding that it has not maintained basic hygiene requirements and was using and recycling rotten, outdated and substandard raw materials in making sweets.

The market inspection team sealed Annapurna Mithai Bhandar at Gaushala for also not renewing its registration, not maintaining basic hygiene in the kitchen, using dirty water for preparing food items and sweets, not storing raw materials properly and not using pest control in the kitchen.[break]

“The store was selling sweets containing dead insects and using rotten raw materials,” said Yogendra Dhungel, food inspector at DFTQC. The store was making and selling substandard products even after DFTQC ordered it about a week ago to stop its willful recklessness.

“We had asked the store to meet basic hygiene requirements and ordered them to present details to the department in three days. We are bound to seal the store and have asked them to furnish written clarifications to DoC within three days for flouting the orders of the department,” Dhungel said. The market inspection team destroyed five kilograms of sweets and two kilograms of raw materials.

Baynjan Misthana Bhandar, another sweet shop at Gaushala, was found not to have renewed the seals on its weighing equipment. The department has ordered the store to renew its equipment within three days.

Likewise, Poonam Trade Link at Mitrapark was also found to be improperly storing around 12 sacks of edible commodities and selling Hulas Basmati Gauri brand rice without showing the expiry date. The store had also not updated its price list.

DoC, DFTQC and Kathmandu DAO have been intensifying market monitoring after more than half a dozen eateries and gudpak producers in the capital were found producing and selling substandard items.
