BAGLUNG, Aug 29: An infant has died after being administered a DPT vaccine on Monday night. The two and half month-old son of Geeta B K of Pakhapani VDC-4, Myagdi district died within 14 hours of the vaccination.

The infant developed a fever after being vaccinated in the afternoon and died in the night. According to BK, her son had slept around 11 pm after drinking some milk and was found dead around 2 a.m.[break]

With the parents of the dead infant indicating the vaccine as the cause of death, the quality of vaccines has again come into question. “It must be the vaccine. A full investigation must be carried out to establish cause of death,” demanded Prasant BK, uncle of the deceased infant.

Responding to the parents´ claim, the public health office and the police took the body of the dead infant for a post mortem at Parbat District Hospital on Tuesday. However, the post mortem report showed that the child died of respiratory problems.

The district health office said it was the infant´s respiratory problems and not any reaction to the vaccination that took his life. “The infant was healthy enough when the vaccination was administered to him,” said Debendra Gurung, vaccination supervisor in Parbat district, who has return from the scene of death. “Some problems must have occured in his respiratory system at night and that took his life.”

Supporting his claim, Gurung said, “If there was any defect in the DPT vaccination, there would have been other casualties.” Ten infants were vaccinated from similar viles.
