According to Home Secretary Nabin Ghimire, the ministry will come up with new plans and programs for the institutional and legal reforms based on the directorate´s report. [break]
After a meeting with different stakeholders on Wednesday afternoon, Ghimire said, “Existing contradictions between the institutions related to the management and reformation of the road and traffic needs to be figured out first to bring the change in the system.”
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ganesh Raj Rai who is also the head of Metropolitan Traffic Division said the discussion focused on dispersion of the responsibility among traffic police, metropolitan city, Road Division on distribution of license, road permit, vehicle check up, road maintenance and other related issues.
“We also emphasized on lacks of manpower and logistics in traffic police,” he added.
Representatives from Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, National Investigating Department, Ministry of Labor and Transport Management and Kathmandu Metropolitan City attended the meeting.
Recently a taskforce, headed by Secretary Dhan Bahadur Tamang was also formed to prepare report on the growing road accidents but it has not been implemented.
According to reports, the number of the people killed in road accidents has been increasing in the highway which the police balme on carelessness of the drivers. Number of accidents in Kathmandu valley has however, been decreasing. The police claim this was mainly due to stricter enforcement of traffic rules, including clampdown on Driving Under Influence across the valley.
