The World Hepatitis Day is observed all over the world on May 19 to create awareness about the disease, its spread, prevention and treatment.
“We as a nation need two-pronged approach, one is to prevent the spread of the disease and the second is to have effective treatment for everybody suffering from hepatitis B and C,” Dr Dilip Sharma, consultant hepatologist at liver unit in Bir Hospital, said.
The most important aspect of prevention is screening of blood products, use of sterilized equipment and better hygienic standards in barber shops, he added.
