NEPALGUNJ, Aug 5: Heavy downpours inundated a large swath of Nepalgunj on Friday.

Majority of the streets have been waterlogged after rains lashed this mid-western city since Thursday night. The waterlogging not only threw life out of gear, but also kept authorities on their heels.[break]

The low-lying streets are full of swirling waters while overflowing sewerage is common is some places. Bulbuliya, Ganeshpur, Koreanpur, Phultekra, Gagangunj, Gharbaritole and Bhurkiti nagar are inundated.

The heavy rains triggered flooding in Rapti River. The swollen river has put the human settlements around it at risk. If water level in Rapti reaches 540 cm, more than half a dozen VDCs, including Holiya, Matehiya, Gangapur, Nairenapur and Laxmanpur VDCs, will be inundated. Taperi village of Holiya VDC is at high risk.

The local authority has rescued 114 households to safe locations by mobilising security personnel. Fearing inundation, some families have left their home for safe places.

Amid flood fears rescue, relief and health workers under the cluster group have been put on high alert, said Banke CDO Krishna Chandra Ghimire.

Authorities have started sending relief and rescue materials to the areas hit by floodwaters.
