KATHMANDU, Aug 9: The government on Sunday appointed Lt Gen Chhatraman Singh Gurung as the acting chief of Nepal Army to be effective from Monday, said Home Minister Bhim Rawal.
A cabinet meeting took this decision as incumbent army chief Rookmangud Katawal is going on a month-long customary leave from Monday. Katawal is retiring on September 9.

Gurung´s appointment means that he will succeed Katawal after September 9. Gurung is the first indigenous person to reach the highest post of the Nepal Army.
The cabinet meeting also formed a committee to prepare a periodic report on the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948. It also appointed Keshavnik Crossiko as the chairman of BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences.
