KATHMANDU, March 8: The meeting of the Special Committee on Supervision, Integration and Rehabilitation of Maoist combatants on Sunday failed to reach any decision as the Maoist representative Barsha Man Pun accused the government of trying to thwart the peace process.

Emerging from the meeting held at the Prime Minister´s Office in Singha Durbar, Pun said that his party representatives would not sit for another meeting till the government creates an environment of trust. [break]

“The meeting did not take any decision,” Pun said, adding, “There is a crisis of trust.”

He accused the prime minister, who heads the Special Committee, of trying to thwart the peace process by publicly saying that Nepali Congress President Girija Prasad Koirala wanted only 3,000 combatants integrated into national security agencies.

He said that government has stopped giving allowances to the Maoist combatants living in the cantonments. “They have not been paid for the last two months,” Pun said.

But Minister for Peace Rakam Chemjong said that the government has been paying combatants every two months and that the date of payment was approaching. He further said that the government will release the allowance immediately after the United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) provides information about the combatants.

“We do not have any plan to stop the allowance but the government wants to ensure that the allowances reach the hands of right persons. It is very difficult to release the allowance unless the UNMIN gives combatants´ information to the government,” said Chemjong.

The minister also accused UNMIN of trying to obstruct the peace process.

“When I requested UNMIN Chief Karin Landgren on February 25 to provide us information about combatants, she had told me that she would contact the UN Headquarters before sharing any information. I was surprised to see a public statement by the UNMIN after a couple of hours after the meeting,” Chemjong told reporters after the meeting.
