KATHMANDU, July 11: Amid mounting public outrage over the death of Ganesh Nepali, the government has formed a five-member Nepal Police probe committee and detained three Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) police personnel to investigate the incident.
Nepali died at Bir Hospital on Friday morning, a day after he set himself on fire outside the Department of Passports (DoP) in Tripureshwor following an altercation with KMC police personnel.

Addressing Friday's meeting of the House of Representatives, Minister for Home Affairs Sudan Gurung said the Kathmandu Valley Police Office, Ranipokhari, had formed the investigation committee under the leadership of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Govinda Thapaliya.
The committee, comprising officials from the Kathmandu District Police Range and the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office, has been tasked with investigating the circumstances leading to the incident, reconstructing the sequence of events and examining the role of the police before submitting its report.
Gurung assured Parliament that the investigation would be conducted impartially and said three Kathmandu Metropolitan Police personnel had been taken into custody pending the probe.
Nepali suffered severe burn injuries after allegedly pouring petrol over himself and setting himself on fire during the confrontation outside the DoP. Despite intensive treatment at Bir Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries to his burn injuries on Friday morning.
The incident has triggered widespread public and political backlash, with lawmakers, political leaders and civil society members demanding a transparent investigation and legal action against anyone found responsible.
