Former minister Khadka sent to jail

KATHMANDU, Aug 22: Nepali Congress (NC) leader and former minister Khum Bahadur Khadka, who was convicted of graft  by the Supreme Court (SC) on August 14, has been sent to Dillibazar jail on Wednesday.



The Kathmandu District Court (KDC) sent  the graft-tainted former minister Khadka to jail as he surrendered before the KDC after depositing properties equivalent to Rs 7.5 million as penalty. [break]



Khadka will spend only 14 months and nine days in the jail as he surrendered before the court prior to sixty days of the apex court verdict. Khadka got a discount of Rs. 75,79, 297 in the penalty.

                 

A convicted criminal can enjoy 20 per cent discount on punishment and fine if s/he surrenders before the court within sixty days as per Section 41 of the Punishment and Fine Chapter of the Country’s Code.



Talking with the reporters in the KDC premises, Khadka said that the apex court verdict was unfair and politically motivated one.



The SC on last Tuesday, had convicted Khadka of corruption and slapped a one-and-a-half-year jail sentence for him along with confiscation of the corruption amount of Rs 9.47 million and a fine of the same amount.
