Bishnu Poudel, assistant CDO of Lalitpur, said Shah has been taken into custody as he failed to submit necessary documents required to operate his business. He said Shah was running wholesale business of potato and onion among others.

“We arrested Shah after he confessed to operating wholesale business without following necessary procedures,” Poudel added.

Meanwhile, the Department of Commerce has intensified market monitoring to end market anomalies ahead of Dashain and Tihar.

Appellate Court stays Sharma´s arrest

Appellate Court, Patan on Monday issued an interim order to police against jailing B L Sharma -- the proprietor of Anmol Sweets who is facing charge of food adulteration.

The court mainly cited Sharma´s old age (88) and poor health condition for issuing such an order. It has, however, asked the concerned authority to continue the investigation and take necessary action against Anmol Sweets.

So far, police have arrested six sweets vendors and vegetable ghee manufactuers for selling low-quality products food and flouting consumer rights law. While they are in judicial custody, Sharma was admitted to Norvic Hospital due to his poor health.

Those found involved in cheating consumers with sub-standard and adulterated food are charged as per Consumers Protection Act, Food Act and Black Marketeering Act.
