DADELDHURA, March 31: Some hundred families of the inner Tarai in Dadeldhura are living in government-owned and community forests, after being displaced by floods last year.

“The river swept away the house and all the land. We don"t have anything to make ends meet,” said a tearful Gorakh Bahadur Thapa of Jogbuda-2, who was displaced by flooding in the Rangoon river. [break]

The displaced families have built huts in the Thandajala, Baskuira, Lamijala, Simkhet, Rampur and Sisamjala forests of Jogbuda VDC, in Parigaun and Katal forests of Sirsha VDC, and Mouri, Godam and Jaltuda of Alital VDC.

The displaced families also do not have extra clothing and are making do with a single set. “The lands have been buried under sand and we can"t grow anything,” complained Khadka Bhat, another displaced person. “We fear cold during winter and leaks during summer,” said Krishna Dutta Bhatta.

“We have repeatedly asked the government to rehabilitate us but to no avail. The richer ones have migrated elsewhere, but we can no longer support our families,” rued Hari Bahadur Bam. The displaced complain that the government has provided them nothing more than Rs 5,000 and some rice and lentils although they have submitting 50 memorandums to the authorities.

As if the daily struggles to make ends meet were not enough, the community forest authorities have been repeatedly warning them to evacuate. Chief District Officer (CDO) Prem Lal Lamichhane said not much could be done for their rehabilitation for lack of funds despite the honest efforts being made.
