FinMin urges WB for extra support for poverty reduction

KATHMANDU, Oct 15: Finance Minister Shankar Prasad Koirala has urged the World Bank (WB) for more financial assistance to Nepal´s development programs aim at reducing poverty.



Taking to media persons briefly upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport today after attending the WB annual meeting held its head office, Washington DC recently, the Finance Minister said during the meeting he called on the WB officials to provide extra assistance for socio-economic progress of Nepal.[break]



"Nepal needs extra budget for the infrastructure development, power production and promotion of tourism sector, he said, adding the development of these sectors would help create employment opportunity and thereby reduce poverty and I apprised the WB officials about this and urged them for additional support."



The Finance Minister was learnt to have apprised the WB officials that WB assistance to Nepal would be a significant support to its plan to upgrade Nepal to a ´developing country´ from the ´least developed country´ by 2022 AD.



Minister Koirala had left for the US on last Monday, heading a five-member delegation to take part in the meeting.
