Ethnic leaders, activists announce new party

KATHMANDU, Dec 30: A group of leaders and activists from the ethnic and indigenous communities has unveiled new party, Social Democratic Party, on Sunday.



The leaders who refused to join Ashok Rai-led Federal Socialist Party, citing their ideological difference with them, announced new party amidst a function in the capital today, a month after the establishment of Rai-led party.[break]



Ethnic activists including Chaitanya Subba, Pasang Sherpa, Krishna Bhattachan among others who earlier opposed Marxism as the party’s guiding principle and some leaders who quit Nepali Congress including Kumar Rai are members in the newly announced party.



The new party has a 7-member presidium and 63-member working committee. In the presidium, Chaitanya Subba, Kumar Rai, Pasang Sherpa, Bamkumari Budhamagar, Dalmardan Kami, Nimagyaljon Hyalmo and Jyoti Danuwar are the members.



The party has vowed to transform the Nepal into a prosperous federal socialist country of the 21st century in the party statute.



Earlier on November 22, a group of ethnic leaders, mainly who earlier deserted CPN-UML, had formed the Federal Socialist Party Nepal, with former CPN-UML vice-chairman Ashok Rai as its chairman.
