NC lawmaker Dr Ram Sharan Mahat registered the motion stating that the prevailing economic crisis is posing great threat to the stability of the democratic system. [break]
“The government should issue a white paper with economic reforms making commitment to resolve the economic crisis,” Mahat who is also a former Finance Minister, told myrepublica.com on Sunday. The proposal was seconded by parliamentarians Deep Kumar Upadhya, Tilak Rawal and Binod Chaudhary.
“Sharp decline in industrial production as well as exports paints a bleak economic picture of the country. Soaring import figure has further worried us,” said Mahat.
Mahat demanded that the government find why remittance inflow has declined despite rise in the number of workers leaving for overseas jobs.
Mahat has also stated that power crisis, feeble law and order situation, frequent strikes, bandas and extortions in the name of different parties and groups have eroded the competitive power of Nepali products due to increasing production cost. “We have to explore the fast track to bail the country out of economic crisis,” added Mahat.
Holiday reduction proposal tabled
Finance Minister Surendra Pandey has table a proposal in a cabinet to reduce the number of government holidays citing its adverse effects. He has proposed for the lump sum leave of 15 days for religious festivals. “I have proposed a total 25 days as national holidays,” Pandey said at a meeting of Parliament´s Finance Committee on Sunday.
