Building Disaster Resilient Communities (BDRC) in coordination with two local groups -- Siddhartha Club and Community Support Group -- is preparing to install an early-warning radar system at Jyamirebari by the Mid April this year. [break]
According to Buddi Poudel, livelihood officer at BDRC, display boards would be placed at Jyamirebari, Kaski District Administration Office and Regional Office of Metrological Forecasting Division to display footage and still pictures of water level to help inform people living near the river about possible dangers.
Poudel also informed that water discharge measurement centers would also be set up in seven to eight places along Seti River. The Flood Forecasting Committee to be formed under the District Administration Office would immediately pass the information to the people living in the vicinity if the radar detects any possible danger.
“The concerned authorities will analyze the footage or picture sent by the radar and will inform the people to take necessary precautions,” Poudel said. “The installation of an early-warning radar system would help reduce the loss of properties and lives in case of a disaster,” he added.
Stating that they are preparing to call tender invitation for procurement of necessary equipment, Poudel informed that the installation works would be completed by the mid April this year.
Niyam Maharjan, technical officer of the project, said that the system would help predict floods and thus minimize loss of lives and property. He also claimed that it would be the first early-warning radar system to be installed in the country. The estimated cost of the project is around Rs 3.5 million.
