KATHMANDU, Sept 29: Dr Govinda KC put off his seventh hunger on Tuesday for the time being even though the government has yet to meet most of his demands related to reform in medical education.

Dr KC said that he decided to call off his hunger strike on the eleventh day stating that the crisis the country is currently facing because of the economic blockade imposed by India needs to be addressed first.

He said that he has not given up on his demands and will resume his hunger strike again if the government refused to address his demands even after things return to normal. He said he called off his hunger strike as per the suggestions from his colleagues, friends and other well-wishers.

Dr KC, a senior professor at the IoM, had started his seventh fast-unto-death at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) on September 18 demanding implementation of the 11-point deal reached between him and the government in order to reform the medical education sector in letter and spirit.

Before starting his seventh hunger-strike, Dr KC had told the media that he was unhappy with the recently formed commission headed by an education minister instead of a prime minister, as per the agreement reached between him and the government.

On a separate note, Dr KC said that all Nepalese should unite against the economic blockade imposed by India.
