KATHMANDU, Nov 21: It was a usual day for the service seekers at the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) office who have to wait for hours for a service.

However, a surprise visit of the Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) and Minister for Federal Affairs and Local Development (MoFALD) Narayan Kaji Shrestha on Wednesday made the day unusual for the KMC staffs.[break]

The DPM´s visit followed complaints of poor service of the KMC and found over eight dozen staff were absent from the office during the early hours. The DPM-led team, including the MoFALD Secretary Shanta Bahadur Shrestha, joint secretaries, under secretaries and department chief also found that the documents had not been updated for several months.

The MOFALD spokesperson Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya said that the DPM had earlier talked with KMC chief Kedar Bahadur Adhikari to improve the KMC service as most the complaints came to ministry regarding the irregularities while granting contracts to private companies to manage vehicle parking in the Capital.

Responding to the visit, the KMC chief said that the DPM has directed monitoring of the parking lots, take strict action against companies that have installed billboards illegally and promptness on sanitation and cleanliness. Those employees irregular at their work would have to face strong action from now onwards, he claimed.

“The DPM´s visit has encouraged me to take action against those officials who had been discarding my instructions in past as well,” said Adhikari adding “Those staff will have to give written clarification first, and will proceed with further action if they discard that.”

Another team from the ministry also inspected the environment division of the KMC at Teku and four ward offices.
