KATHMANDU, Jan 15: Deputy Prime Minister Bijaya Kumar Gachchadar on Tuesday stressed the need of coordinated efforts to reduce the risk of earthquake.

Speaking at a function organized to observe the 15th National Earthquake Safety Day, Gachchadar asked non-governmental organizations and ordinary people to work in coordination with the government for earthquake preparedness.[break]

“The government and non-governmental organizations must coordinate in order to protect the people from earthquakes,” said Gachhadar.

As part of the one-week-long campaign aimed at spreading awareness about earthquake, various organizations on Tuesday organized processions that converged into a rally at Basantapur of Kathmandu.

At the function, UN Resident & Humanitarian Coordinator Robert Piper said, “In my daily travels through the Kathmandu Valley I do not see evidence that the risk is well understood. I see more risk built on top of existing risk as high rise buildings grow by the day. I see more schools opening without safety certification. I see fire trucks sitting in fire stations without tires or water. ”

The function was attended by the chiefs of Nepal Police and Nepal Army as well as Home Secretary Navin Kumar Ghimire.

The campaign will formally end on 19 January. Till then, different functions like photo exhibition will be carried out.
