KATHMANDU, June 11: Senior Nepali Congress (NC) leader K B Gurung has asked both NC and UML not to drag President Dr Ram Baran Yadav into controversy under the pretext of resolving the constitutional crisis.

Gurung argued that there is no point in asking Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai to resign as his status has been rendered to that of a caretaker´s following the demise of the Constitutent Assembly on May 27. [break]

"It is not good for NC and UML to ask the president to sack the prime minister. They should instead come up with a consensus candidate for the post of prime minister to resolve the crises," he said to a group of journalists at his residence in Jawalakhel.

Gurung was concerned over the possibility of confrontation if the Maoists and non-Maoist parties formed alliances against each other. "Our country is heading for a fresh confrontation. Even president cannot resolve the crises if the country slipped into a full-fledged confrontation," he said.

He also asked agitating alliance of NC and the UML to come forward with a consensus candidate to succeed Bhattarai as prime minister. "Now the ball is in the court of the political parties, not in the president´s," he further said.

On the occasion, he also underscored the need for a round table of political parties supporting and opposing federalism.

Gurung also argued that the need to ensure equal opportunities for all groups of people rather than federalism. "It is high time we started debate on what is federalism and how should it be adopted in Nepal," he further said.
