As part of their protest the doctors wore black arm bands on Sunday and staged a hour-long sit in outside the vice chancellor´s office. "We cannot always work under fear of attack," said Dr Madhur Basnet, President of Junior Resident Welfare Society. "That is why we have been forced to take this step."

The society said it had demanded greater security at the hospital about two weeks ago but no action was taken which led to an assault of a doctor four days ago.

In the latest incident, Dr. Pranat Santhaliya was allegedly attacked by the local youths who accused the doctors of not giving priority to their relatives.

“"The management does not show any interest in taking action against those who misbehave with doctors on duty”" Basnet said.

However, Dr. B.P. Das, Vice Chancellor of the institute, said Santhaliya´s case had already been resolved through negotiation.

He also asked the agitated doctors to refrain from unnecessarily hyping minor incident. Das said,“"We are serious about the security of doctors but despite that some accidents do happen and we should try to solve the problems through negotiations”"
