CHITWAN, Dec 20: Dhrube, a wild elephant whom Chitwan National Park (CNP) authorities wanted dead after he killed seven people in less than three months, was shot at on Wednesday, claimed sources.

According to sources close to a team deployed to hunt down the mad tusker, Dhrube was spotted somewhere in Meghauli on Wednesday evening, and was shot at around 4:30 pm. However, even after being shot, Dhrube managed to run away. “He is yet to die,” said sources. [break]

However, the concerned authorities were tight-lipped about shooting Dhrube till Wednesday night. “I do not know exactly if he was shot,” said Megh Bahadur Pandey, Director General of Department of National Parks and Wildlife Reserve (DNPWC).

But, Pandey said Dhrube will be killed by Thursday.

Authorities are under pressure to kill Dhrube as the relatives of a Bote couple, who became the latest victims of Dhrube, have refused to cremate the dead bodies.
