KATHMANDU, JUNE 12: The Fourth Annual Convention organized by Mahakavi Laxmiprasad Devkota Adhyayan Tatha Anusandhan Kendra began on June 11, Saturday at Padmakanya College, Bagbazar.

The two-day convention will mostly include recitals of Devkota’s works as a tribute to the great poet.[break]

Chief guest Basudev Tripathi formally inaugurated the event by highlighting the works of Devkota, Sulochana being his focus.

“The fact that he wrote Sulochana in three months is nothing short of incredible. And there are those who still deny it,” he said.

Comparing Devkota with Rabindranath Tagore, he said, “Four decades of Devkota’s service to Nepali literature has made Nepali language rich and strong.

” Tripathi also shed light on Devkota’s progressive writing techniques and the criticism Devkota faced.

Poet Kali Prasad Rijal recited Devkota’s Paagal (The Lunatic) and said, “Translating Devkota’s work is a near-impossible task.

Every word in his works has so much meaning in them.”

Gandharva ki Hassi, Damai Dai, Spring, He Trembled in Every Limb and Laharko Boli were the other recitals at the event.

The second and final day of the convention will include discussions on Devkota’s work and its influence on today’s society.

The event will conclude with a discussion on Devkota’s vision of modern Nepali subjectivity.

The event, according to the organizers, aims at not only remembering Devkota’s works but also making people aware that his works are still strong and fresh to compete with modern literature.
