KATHMANDU, Aug 16: US Ambassador Scott H DeLisi has condemned the threat issued by Mahesh Basnet, president of CPN-UML-aligned Youth Association Nepal (YAN), against media and journalists. DeLisi urged CPN-UML leaders to deplore Basnet´s challenge to rule of law.

"I don´t want to believe that the UML can condone this type of thuggery and intimidation. I hope all senior leaders of the party, particularly, those who are alleged to support and protect Mr Basnet, will set the record straight by deploring and condemning his efforts to replace the rule of law with the rule of the bully," DeLisi said in his Facebook post on Monday.[break]

Ambassador DeLisi further said, "Like many people, I read reports of Mahesh Basnet´s comments over the weekend; and like many people, I find myself deeply disturbed by them on many levels.

He continues to condone the horrendous beating of a Nepali journalist, with which Parshuram Basnet is charged, and compounds his callousness with the threat of further violence against the media."

Addressing a program in Biratnagar on Saturday, Basnet had even warned police officers and their families of revenge. "... his threats to the police, and his vows of revenge against their wives and children, equally have no place in any decent and civilized nation. It is certainly not a reflection of the people of Nepal I have come to admire and respect," DeLisi said.
