NEPALGUNJ, Jan 16: President of the Transparency International Nepal, Bishnu Bahadur KC, said that corruption could not be checked until the bureaucracy is made accountable and responsible.

Speaking in an interaction on effective public service organised by the Bageshwari Good-governance Club here on Tuesday, KC said, "Nepal figures on top band in the Global Corruption Index also because the political parties and the government were not found to be responsible in corruption control measures."[break]

He said it would be difficult to find a single honest person in future if the scourge of corruption that has grown exponentially over the years was not dealt with in time.

Various government officials in the district and representatives of local bodies had shed light on the different services provided by their respective offices and the efforts being made to make the services people-friendly and accessible to them.

A majority of the speakers at the programme underlined the need of strong legislation for dealing with this social scourge called corruption.
