RUKUM, April 10: Women here have ventured out of the households to try their hands on government jobs, something they would not consider viable in the past.

Ganga Khadka, of Peguwa-4, has nowadays shaped a new routine. After getting done with the kitchen chores, she goes out of the house with a study kit containing books, notebooks and pens while her husband moves to the grocery store and their three children to the school.[break]

She enters a hall at the Karmachari Milan Kendra where sixty local women sit throughout the day preparing for the exams of Public Service Commission (PSC) for the post of Kharidar (a clerical position in civil service). The Women and Children Committee under the District Development Committee (DDC) has been running the free PSC preparation classes for local women. Of 150 women who applied for the free class, sixty were selected.

Most interestingly, the district has witnessed a wave among local women to join PSC exams preparation classes even those run by private agencies. The prospect of government jobs has also attracted the women who already have jobs in non-governmental sector. Pabi Bista of Machhami Village, an NGO worker, says a government job is gratifying because it gives one an opportunity to directly serve the people.

Sabitiri Shah, the DDC´s Women and Children Officer, said the preparation class intends to enable the local women not only to compete under the women reservations quota but also under open competition. Last year, 10 women who attended similar classes passed the PSC exams and secured the coveted government jobs.

Two instructors have been hired from the capital to conduct the classes.
