A total of 200 students from 24 schools in the valley participated in the competition which was aimed at bringing light to the issue of waste management and the workers in this profession amongst school-going kids.

CIUD supports the education of 300 children whose parents are informal waste workers. The participants also included 28 children from families working in waste management who also gave their own perspectives about the issue of the safety of waste workers through their essays.

The competition was held in two categories for junior school and senior school. Sagar Kandel from Mahendra Boudha Higher Secondary School stood first in the competition for the senior section while Poonam Tamang from Kumudani Kunja Secondary School and Devki Adhikari from Janpath Secondary School came second and third, respectively.

From the senior’s category, Memu Tamang from Mahendra Boudha Higher Secondary school was awarded with the first prize whereas Suraj Kumar Jaiswal from Rastriya Lower Secondary School and Mahemad Dular from Siddhartha Children Academy were second and third, respectively.

The winners were awarded with stationary supplies and educational materials.

“We organized this competition so that the children of the informal waste workers will be more motivated towards education, because they need to be well-educated to be able to invest in the same profession in a more professional and structured manner,” said Pushkar Lal Shrestha, Executive Director of CIUD.

“We have also been approaching teachers from schools and encouraging them to give more attention and recognition to these children considering their family background,” he added.
