Samar Dhwoj Acharya, Kishor Raj Adhikari, Shilpa Khanal and Suresh Shrestha are all young people who have been awarded with scholarships at Kathmandu University by Web Search Professional (P) Ltd, a European IT outsourcing company, to pursue their dreams of becoming software professionals. It was out of 50 applicants that these four clinched the scholarships. [break]

“As part of its corporate social responsibility, Web Search Professional (P) Ltd, a subsidiary of Fair Enterprise Network AB of Sweden has been providing two students with scholarship every year from 2007,” informs the company’s CEO, Bina Shrestha. This year, the scholarship is in its third year, and has been extended to four students this time.

“The scope of IT is expanding in Nepal, but there is a crunch in quality human resources. Thus we wanted to groom our own manpower, and simultaneously support financially backward people willing to work in this field as well,” says Shrestha.

Sixty per cent of the tuition fees for four years of computer engineering studies is sponsored by the Web Search “while the rest of the 40% is to be earned by the students by working on practical projects for the company,” adds Bina.

But to clinch this opportunity is not simple. Applicants have to go through four rounds of selection process. The company filters the first round of candidates through verbal interviews. Then the selected ones have to face several practical rounds which include IQ, logic, demonstration of computer skills, and presentation skills. Finally, the best ones sit with a KU panel and the members of the company for the interviews.

After the students graduate, it is mandatory for them to work with Web Search professionals for four years. But Bina claims that there is no discrimination in terms of salary. “They are paid like any other staffs of the company,” asserts Bina.
