The Central Region team, which comprised NSJF Pulsar popular player of the year nominee Ramila Tandukar and Kamala Pun, defeated departmental giant Nepal Police Club´s Sushila Thapa and Kopila Upreti in straight sets 21-16, 21-13 to lift the title. [break]The 15-year-old Tandukar was declared the best player of the tournament.
Along with the title, Central Region also bagged a purse of Rs 10,000 as the champion while runner-up Police received Rs 7,000.
Meanwhile, the pair of Binita Budhathoki and Nebica Chaudhary defeated Nima Shrestha and Jyoti Chaudhary´s pair 21-17, 21-10 in straight sets in an all-APF third-place playoff match. Budhathoki and Chaudhary bagged a cash prize of Rs 5,000 while the fourth position holders received Rs 3,000.
After winning the title, Tandukar expressed delight at her first victory in beach volleyball. "We are happy to beat senior players. This is the first time we have defeated Police in beach volleyball and it is a great achievement for the team," Tandukar said, adding, "The opponents were strong and we put in great effort. But the final was not as competitive as expected."
The first set of the final match was very competitive and the scores were tied at 10-10 at the halfway mark. But Tandukar and Pun were at their best and claimed the first set. Police player Upreti made a host of mistakes in the second set and Central Region capitalized on them to take home the title.
Meanwhile, it was a disappointing day for another departmental team Armed Police Force as both its teams lost the semifinals held earlier.
Police´s Nita Shah and Chuda Khadka, the defending champions, did not take part in the tournament as they are currently in China to compete in the Third Asian Beach Games.
National Sports Council´s former member secretary Keshav Sthapit, SP Singh, the chairman and executive chief of main sponsor Pentagon College, and Nepal Volleyball Association President Dan Bahadur Tamang gave away prizes to the winners.
The tournament organized by Nepal Volleyball Association was participated by a total of 14 teams, including two teams each from five regions, Nepal Police and APF.
ANFA approves Taplejung association
KATHMANDU (REPUBLICA): All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) on Monday approved the 19-member ad hoc committee of Taplejung District Football Association formed under the chairmanship of Moti Kumar Patwa. According to a press statement issued by ANFA, the committee was formed by an all-party meeting held under the coordination of Taplejung District Sports Development Committee. Laxmi Kafle and Indra Kedem are the vice-presidents while Chandra Kumar Thebe is the general secretary of the committee. Chhabiraman Gurung and Narayan Thapa are the secretary and treasurer respectively.
