Cancer Day marked

KATHMANDU, Feb 4: Experts say number of deaths caused by cancer is more than the mortality rate caused by AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis in common.



Speaking at a function organised by Nepal Cancer Relief Society on the occasion of Cancer Day in the capital Friday, they said the number of cancer patient has been increasing.[break]



It has been reported that there are around 70,000 cancer patients and 75 percent of them dies owing the lack of necessary treatment.



Chairman of the Society Lokendra Kumar Shrestha said around 40 percent of cancer cases can be cured when treated on time. He said cancer can be prevented when the balance diet is taken and smoking avoided.



Central member of the Society Dr. Rajendra Baral said the total 13 percent of the total deaths is caused by cancer per year and around 16,000 people die of smoking in Nepal every year.



On the occasion, Minister of State for Health Khadga Bahadur Basyal inaugurated the Tumor Board that has been formed to solve the cancer related problems. The Board will discuss over the problems and bring out the methods for prevention and treatment of cancer disease.



He handed over Rs. 10,000 each to different five schools in the Capital to run the campaign against smoking.



State Minister for Health Basyal said people leaving in the remote areas will be benefitted when Cancer Hospitals in Mid and Far-Western Development Region were established.



Outgoing chairman of the Society Diwakar Rajkarnikar said a cancer helpline has been planned to be established for the campaign to fight against cancer disease.
