Call to raise access of women journos to ICT tools

KATHMANDU, Jan 12: Participants of a workshop organized here on Saturday stressed the need to raise access of women journalists to ICT tools to further increase their efficiency.



Speaking at a workshop titled ´Role of ICT for Women in Journalism´, Binod Dhakal, president of Computer Association of Nepal (CAN), emphasized strategic use of ICT tools to further enhance efficiency of women journalists.[break]



The workshop was organized by Women in ICT sub-committee of CAN.



Nirmala Sharma, president of Sancharika Samuha, said women should be proactive in the use of ICT for promoting professional journalism. “Media houses, government as well as civil society should invest on enhancing competence of women journalists by increasing their access to ICT tools,” she added.



Suvekchya Bindu Tuladhar, president of Working Women Journalists (WWJ), highlighted issues of gender insensitivity in media sector. “Increasing access of women journalists in decision making process can make the difference,” she added.



The sub-committee also shared the findings of online survey carried out before the workshop. The findings showed women journalists require continuous support in updating themselves with new tools of ICT for capacity development.
