Mercy Corps Nepal will run the project in two eastern districts of Panchthar and Bhojpur for a period of one year. “It will benefit 1,200 women in the two districts,” Sanjay Karki, country director of Mercy Corps Nepal, said, informing, “Most of the money would be used on training women to empower and enable them to be financially independent.”[break]
Patricia Riingen, Western Union senior vice president for East and South Asia, said the contribution made by the company was a small step toward helping underprivileged women and bringing economic opportunities closer to their homes.
Since its inception in 2001, the Western Union Foundation, the philanthropy arm of the global remittance company, has provided $230,000 in grants to 15 projects in Nepal to support education and create economic opportunities. Half of the projects were co-funded by Western Union agents, according to the company, which has been operating in the country for last one and half decades.
