KATHMANDU, August 7: The theatre at Gurukul, Old Baneshwor came alive with the crew of Arohan Theatre, staging the play, “Bukhyacha” on August 5. The play, a Nepali version of the Italian playwright Dario Fo’s, “About Face,” is a political satire altered into the Nepali context.

The play, directed by Sunil Pokharel has been translated into Nepali from English by Basanta Bhatta.[break]

“Since the last few years, this particular play was on my mind which is also relevant to the current political situation of the country. The play also includes humor as well which is the main reason for us to have come out with this play,” said Sunil Pokharel.

He further informed that it took around ten days to complete the play.

The play begins with the character of Savitri, played by Aruna Karki Pokharel visiting a hospital to identity her husband, Mahendra Nath, played by RajKumar Pudasaini, who has been crippled by an accident.

David, played by RajKumar Pudasaini once again, is a rich Industrialist respected by all. He gets into an automobile accident and is rescued by Mahendra Nath, a communist and a worker.

Savitri believes that the man at the hospital is her husband. A case of mistaken identity follows as the mangled David is reconstructed by plastic surgery and given a replica face of the person who saved him, Mahendra Nath.

Kavita, played by Sarita Giri, who is having an affair with Mahindra Nath, to save him from the misunderstanding, she also agrees to believe that the crippled man is her lover.

This is followed by, hilarity which piles up as government agents, policemen and wives try to figure out the situation and the reality.

The characters all play their parts to an extreme that results in a mix up, creating chaos and drama.

The play had the audiences glued to the stage since it entertains with not just humor and wit but also provokes the audience into thinking and relating the satires to that of their own country’s political scenarios.

Mahendra Nath flawlessly plays the doubly challenging role of both the communist worker and David.

The audiences at all point are able to identify with the character of Mahendra Nath, while other characters within the play often remain confused.

For Dario Fo, without laughter, the ideas die in suffocation and he believes that humor gives life to such ideas. Dario Fo, is an Italian satirist, playwright, theater director, actor and a composer, whose dramatic work employs comedic methods.

He was also awarded the 1997 Nobel Prize for Literature.

This funny and witty political farce is recommended for everyone with a sense of humor.

The play which opened at Gurukul from August 6 will run until September 3 and will start at 5:30 pm except on Mondays.
