BIRATNAGAR, Sept 11: It has come to light that an unscruplous private boarding school in Morang sold government-donated land to an individual.

Bhupu Sainik Borading School established by a group of former servicemen of the British Army, Indian Army and Nepali Army at Pathari-1 had sold one kattha [0.08 acre] of the government-donated land to a local Santakumar Shrestha for one million rupees.[break]

The transaction became known after Limbuwan Volunteers (LV), youth wing of the ethnic-based outfit Sanghiya Limbuwan Rajyaparisad, informed it through a press conference in Morang on Sunday.

Shrestha has started building a house on the land but LV has warned him to stop the construction work immediately.

The so-called Morang commander of LV, Sabin Chemjong, said they would capture the land from Shrestha if the latter did not stop construction work.

Acting chairman of the Former Army Servicemen Welfare Association in Pathari, Tanka Sambhahamphe, admitted that the school had sold the land to Shrestha for one million rupees five years ago. The public land was provided to the school by the Landless People´s Problem Solving Commission (LPPSC).

The school later mortgaged the land to Shrestha for a time-bound loan of one million rupees. According to Sambahamphe, the school was ready to pay back the loan, but Shrestha refused to return it the land is in prime location.

The then LPPSC Chairman Basanta Bhattarai had provided the school with around three bighas [5.02 acres] of land. However the school has yet to receive the land ownership certificate.
