Blake urges Nepal, Dahal to respect peace commitments

KATHMANDU, Jan 13: The United States has urged the government and the UCPN (Maoist) to continue to respect their commitments in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement even after the departure of UNMIN on Saturday, pleadging to continue its support to the peace process.



US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Robert Blake called Prime Minister Madhav Nepal and Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal separately on the phone Thursday evening to encourage them to adhere to thier commitments to the peace process. [break]



"He [Blake] told both the leaders that the US government´s commitment to support the peace process will continue after UNMIN leaves on January 15 and urged all parties to continue to respect their own commitments under the Comprehensive Peace Agreement," said a statement issued by the US Embassy about the separate phone conversations of Blake with Nepal and Dahal.



Blake told the prime minsiter and the Maoist chairman that Nepali people look to their political leadership to "bring the peace process to much needed closure".
