Australia, NZ, India, SA win

KATHMANDU, Aug 14: Host Australia made it to the last eight from Group A after defeating Ireland by six wickets in its last group stage match of ICC U 19 World Cup at Endeavour Park, Townsville, on Tuesday.



Electing to bat first, Ireland posted 129 in 42.5 overs, with R Hunter topscoring with 31 off 39 balls. In reply, defending champion Australia made 133 in 40.3 overs losing four wickets. [break]



Australia had earlier beaten England by six wickets in its opening match and Nepal by 212 runs in its next match. England has one win from two matches, while Ireland has lost both matches it has played so far. Nepal has two matches to go in the league round, the next being against Ireland on Wednesday.



In a Group B match at Kev Hackney Oval, Buderim, played today, New Zealand beat Afghanistan by 8 runs. Batting first, New Zealand were all out for 198 in 50 overs. Chasing the modest total, Afghanistan could manage only 190 runs.



Likewise, in a Group C match played at at Tony Ireland Stadium, Townsville, India beat Zimbabwe by 63 runs. Put in to bat first, India scored 261/6 in 50 overs. Zimbabwe could make only 198 despite a brilliant 118 off just 107 balls (10 fours, 5 sixes) by M Lake.



Also in today’s Group D match played at Peter Burge Oval, Brisbane, South Africa crushed neighbor Namibia by 209 runs. Electing to bat first, South Africa posted a colossal 359/6 in 50 overs, with Q Kock (126) and C Bowes (115) sharing a massive 212-run opening stand. In reply, Namibia was all out for 150 in 46 overs.
