KATHMANDU, Jan 28: The Ministry of Finance (MoF) has directed Nepal Stock Exchange (Nepse) to create environment conducive for agitating employees to return to work at the earliest.

MoF officials issued a formal direction to Nepse management on Friday after the employees brought trading of stock at the sole secondary market in the county to a grinding halt from Tuesday.[break]

In the directive sent by Tanka Mani Sharma, joint secretary at MoF, the MoF has directed Nepse management to forward demands of workers to the ministry once the employees return to work.

“As their demands are related to good governance at Nepse, the ministry directs the Nepse management to incorporate all related aspects while preparing working procedure,” Sharma added.

The ministry also directed Nepse management not to take any decision on employees´ salary and benefits as it goes against the government decision of not reviewing salary and benefits before 2013.

Responding to the ministry´s directive, Bhesh Raj Khanal, chairman of Nepse Employees´ Association, said the management made a mistake by forwarding the employees demands to the ministry despite the Nepse board having authority to take decision on its own.

Khanal said the employees would not return to work unless the Nepse board makes written commitment to fulfill their demands. He also said the decision of not reviewing salary and benefits before 2013 was a unilateral decision of the government and claimed that the management had not informed them about the decision.

“The ministry, Nepse management and employees have forged consensus on the demands after holding a series of meeting on Wednesday and Friday. However, there has been no written agreement,” he informed.

Nepse employees had started protest on Jan 16, piling pressure on the management for implementation of agreements reached with them.
