KATHMANDU, Sept 4: Young but motivated, Nirvana Tandon Chettri started working a week after her A-Level results were over. At just 19, she has the experience of working in marketing, promotions and event management.

Upbeat and outspoken, she joined this sector because it was what she first came across when she decided that she needed to do something to use her free time.

And after working for Navyataa Magazine and Kgarira, an event management company, Nirvana thinks this is the right field for her.[break]

“I’m the type of a person who, when kept in a room full of unknown people, can come out making friends. This profession is so ‘me,’” she says.

First an intern at Kgarira, she later joined the company as a Marketing Executive and Event Coordinator. “This job just happened to land on my lap,” says Nirvana.

In what ways has your job helped you?

Working at Kgarira and Navyaata has helped me a lot. Before working with Navyaata, I was totally unaware of how a publication runs. But now I know the mechanisms. My job at Kgarira has enhanced my confidence and has strengthened my public relations. I got to know and work with a lot of people.

What were some major challenges you faced?

A personal issue I faced was the fact that our events went on usually till midnight. I don’t mind that and my parents are pretty liberal but it’s the society that I fear. Also, people here lack professionalism. I like punctuality and getting things done ahead of time. But most people here only have the habit of working when the deadline comes near.

Why do you think young people like yourself have started working nowadays?

Westernization also has its good parts. I think young people in Nepal have been inspired from the culture of the West of working and being independent at an early age. I think we should start at an early age. As far as working and studying is concerned, it’s pretty much doable. All we need to know is how to manage our time.

Do you think starting early has disadvantages?

The only disadvantage is that people tend to think that you’re irresponsible just because you’re young. When you go out on the field, they tend to look down on you. Inside the company, however, seniors pamper you and always help you a lot.

What are your work ethics?

Punctuality is very important for me. Also, I make sure I get what I deserve. I’m against the idea of working for free.

What do you aspire to do later in life?

Work with embassies and organizations like the United Nations (UN). I like aiming high. Also, I want to work in a profession which gives me ample opportunities to travel. I don’t see myself doing a desk job.

Any suggestions for young people looking for work?

Keep your options open. You need to be able to adjust with anything.
