Berger’s interests lie in capturing the daily lives of people through his lens. And therefore, he went on to specialize in photo-monitoring – that is, pictures taken from the same spot at a certain interval, thus showing the changes in landscapes due to human activities, climate or by natural forces.[break]
He returns to the same places many years later to document changes in people and landscapes. The photos complement the technical documentation of the landscapes and help the viewers to enter into an unknown discovery of details, changes and similarities.
Berger’s photographs of Nepal taken as early as 1974 and today are mirrors of time.
The images taken in various parts of the country, mostly between Dolalghat and Jiri, speak for themselves. Featured here are a few images from his collection.
A comprehensive exhibition of his images titled “A new tree in Charikot” will open at Nepal Art Council, Babar Mahal, on August 1. This collection is further augmented by photos from Kathmandu and Manang, as well as pairs of pictures from Switzerland and Nepal. These large portraits emphasize that the well-being of people needs to be the central objective of any planned development.
A new tree in Charikot will remain open to public until August 10.
