According to a report made public by the Nepal Police headquarters on Sunday, Jaya Krishna Goit-led Janatantrik Tarai Mukti Morcha (JTMM-Goit), JTMM (Jwala) and JTMM (Rajan) have disappeared from crime scenes in the Tarai region. The report mentions JTMM (Goit) as non-operational for nearly two years while JTMM (Jwala) and JTMM (Rajan), splinter factions of the JTMM-Goit, do not appear to have carried out any criminal activities for three months now.[break]
Kirat Janabadi Workers Party (KJWP), which became a major threat to law and order in the eastern hills for a couple of years has been inactive lately, according to the report.
The groups that police terms as inactive include Nepal Defence Army, Ranabir Sena, Tarai Cobra, Tarai Army and Pralhad Group, among others.
Nepal Police spokesman DIG Navaraj Dhakal, briefing on the report, said the criminal groups have disappeared as a result of the Special Security Plan. “It is all because of effective mobilization of forces and intelligence.”
Inactivity of three major groups, which tried to cash in on political sentiments, indicates improvement in law and order in the Tarai, Dhakal said.
According to the report, the year 2010 saw presence of 107 various underground armed groups including those that disappeared on different dates.
The report also offers a numerical analysis of the groups´ presence in different regions. The eastern region saw 14 incidents involving the groups while the capital valley saw eight such incidents -- bomb blasts. The central region recorded 16 incidents, western 6, the midwestern 8 and the farwestern 1 instigated by different groups.
