KATHMANDU, Jan 11: The three major parties - UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress and CPN-UML -- have formed a six-man taskforce to offer suggestions to them on peace process issues after the departure of UNMIN. It has two representatives each from the three parties.

Formed under the initiative of Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, the informal taskforce comprises Maoist leaders Narayan Kaji Shrestha and Barshman Pun, NC leaders Dr Ram Sharan Mahat and Dr Minendra Rajal, and CPN-UML leaders Ishwor Pokharel and Bhim Rawal. [break]

Though the taskforce will decide its brief and terms after its first meeting likely to be convened Wednesday, the Prime Minister´s Press Advisor, Bishnu Rajal, said the taskforce has been broadly mandated to re-examine peace process-related documents and identify loopholes in them, besides making suggesting on how the peace process should be handled after the departure of UNMIN on Saturday.

The idea of the taskforce was floated during the three-party meeting last Wednesday, but it did not take full shape as the Nepali Congress objected to it. The party has maintained that the taskforce should not be an alternative to the Special Committee on Integration and Rehabilitation of Maoist combatants.

“We are likely to meet tomorrow [Wednesday],” said Rijal, who is also a special committee member, adding that the taskforce´s brief and terms will be discussed at the first meeting.
