According to Joint Secretary Laxman Bhattarai, spokesperson at the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoTCA), the ministry has formed a 16-member main organizing committee to hold the event. “We have decided to invite all Everest summiteers,” he said. [break]
Officials at the MoCTA said some 200 Everest summiteers from various parts of the world are alive. “We hope that most of them will attend the event,” Bhattarai added.
Officials said that the ministry plans to felicitate the summiteers and also provide them with identity cards amidst a special function to be held in Kathmandu.
Late Sir Edmund Hillary along with Tenzing Norgay Sherpa for the first time conquered the tallest peak back on May 29, 1953. May 29 is celebrated every year as Everest Day.
Joint Secretary Bhattarai said the government also plans to hold golden jubilee ceremony to mark the ascent of the Mount Dhaulagiri (8167m) on May 13.
Bhattarai said that the government has invited Kurt Diemberger, the first summiteer of Mount Dhaulagiri who conquered the mountain on May 13, 1960, to attend the function. "The main event of the golden jubilee ceremony of the ascent will be held at Pokhara," he further said.
The government has decided to build a memorial in Kakani in Kathmandu of those who died while trying to scale the Mount Dhaulagiri.
