The day is celebrated on August 9 annually as proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 23 December 1994 during the first International Decade of the World´s Indigenous People.[break]
The day is celebrated to promote and protect the rights of the world’s indigenous population. The event also recognizes the achievements and contributions that indigenous people make to improve world issues such as environmental protection.
Various programs are being organized with much fanfares to mark the day by different indigenous organizations and communities in Nepal.
Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN), an umbrella organization of the Nepali indigenous communities, is also organizing a formal program at Bhrikutimandap Kathmandu to mark the occasion.
According to NEFIN, Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai is scheduled to inaugurate the program.
