16 injured in clashes

TANAHUN, April 9: Sixteen persons including 10 policemen were injured as locals demanding regular power supply clashed with police on Friday in Dumre of Tanahun district.



The clash began as police attempted to chase away locals who were obstructing the Prithvi Highway in Dumre. Police fired 14 shells of tear gas to disperse agitators.



The injured have been identified as police inspectors Birendra Thapa, Bhim Prasad Silwal, sub inspector Ishwari Paudel and policemen Rudra Chhetri, Shree Ram Achhami, Narayan Thapa and Amrit Bhandari.



The locals injured in the clash are Laxmi Gurung, Shanti Shrestha, Sundar Dawadi, Ram Kumar Nepali and Ashok Gauli. The injured locals are undergoing treatment at Laxmi Hospital in Dumre.



Dumre denizens have been protesting for several days to press the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) local office for resuming power supply. Over 20 villages in Tanahun and Gorkha districts have plunged into absolute darkness after a transformer overheated.



During Friday´s clash, agitating locals vandalized about half a dozen public vehicles. On the other hand, police had manhandled a traveler, Shanta Rajkarnikar, for taking photo of the clash.



Local villagers had obstructed the highway in Syauli Bazar after police chased them away from Dumre. They had again placed obstacles on the roads in Yampaphat following police intervention.
