14 Nepalis arrested in casino raids

KATHMANDU, Nov 19: A police team from the Metropolitan Police Range Office, Kathmandu, raided Everest Casino located at New Baneshwar and Royal Casino at Durbar Marg and arrested 14 Nepalis on the charge of gambling. Nepali nationals are not allowed to gamble at casinos.



According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jaya Bahadur Chand, a plainclothes police team arrested them after a tip-off and seized Rs 57,525 and eighty-four casino chips of different denominations worth Rs 51,940. All 14 Nepalis were arrested from Royal Casino, police said.[break]



Those arrested are Prem Tamang 36; Pramod Dev Poudel 52; Rajkumar Tamang, 32; Rajesh Bom, 24; Hari Prasad Lamichane, 35; Rajan Basti, 28; Madhav Nepal, 35; Dhan Bahadur Gole, 26; Prakash Lama, 21; Ramchandra Bogati, 23; Ram Bahadur Khawas, 29; Prakash Shrestha, 38; Shyam Kumar KC, 49; and Ambika Thapa. 40.



SSP Chand said that those arrested will be charged under Gambling Act 1963, which bars Nepali nationals from entering casinos with the intention of gambling or to provide loan to gamblers.



Despite frequent police raids on casinos, gambling by Nepalis has not stopped at such places.



According to the law, gamblers can be fined Rs 200 in the first instance, if caught for the second time they face 1-3 months of jail and more than one year jail for the third time.
